“We know our product is valuable—but we’re struggling to explain why.”
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. I was working with a client one day who was really struggling to capture the essence and value of his solution for his target audience – veterinary practices. He had lots of great ideas swirling around inside his head. But capturing the essence of the value he provided was difficult, and coming up with a compelling “elevator pitch” was elusive.
“I just need a great headline that packs punch,” he said.
“Yes,” I said, “But first, you need a good message blueprint.”
This client wasn’t alone. Lots of companies struggle to determine how to position their product or service so that it’s interesting, compelling, and resonates with the target audience. (i.e. What do they do, and why should anyone care?) That’s really the starting point of good marketing, and it requires what we call the Message Blueprint (or Message Platform). Just as you get better results building a house when you follow a good blueprint, you’ll get better results from your marketing efforts if you follow a solid message platform that’s built on insightful research and good testing.
So, What Is a Message Blueprint?
It’s your internal messaging foundation. Think of it as a living document that guides every piece of communication your brand puts out into the world.
At its core, the Message Blueprint is a simple yet powerful breakdown of what your company offers and why it matters. It consists of:
- Value Proposition: This is your big, bold statement that defines the difference you make for your customers.
- 3 to 5 Key Messages: These support and clarify the value proposition, explaining how you deliver value and what makes you stand out.
- Proof Points: These are the facts, figures, and stats that back up each key message. They turn your claims into credibility.
Sometimes a Message Blueprint can take the form of text in an outline form, and sometimes it makes more sense to display it visually. In either case, the idea is to have a core value proposition that’s supported by key messages which are supported by facts, or proof points.

How Do You Build a Message Blueprint?
Here’s the golden rule: never write a message platform in a vacuum.
You need research. You need insight. And most importantly—you need perspective from both inside and outside your company.
Here’s our tried-and-true process:
- Deep-Dive Discovery with Your Team
We start by understanding what you want your audience to believe about your brand, your solution, and your unique value. - Audience Interviews & Surveys
Then we talk to your target market to find out what they actually believe about you, and how they perceive your competitors. - Competitive Audit
Finally, we study how others in your space are positioning themselves. This helps identify white space, overused buzzwords, and missed opportunities.
Once the research is in, the magic starts to happen. Patterns emerge. Unexpected themes surface. You’ll hear the same phrases repeated across interviews. And out of that noise, your unique message begins to take shape.
We call it the “Aha!” moment—and it’s our favorite part.
What Does a Great Message Blueprint Look Like?
You’ll know you’ve nailed it when:
- Your value proposition clearly articulates the difference you make and why it matters.
- Your key messages tell a compelling story that sets you apart from the competition.
- Your proof points provide undeniable evidence that backs your claims and builds trust.
When these pieces work together, your marketing becomes exponentially more powerful because it’s all aligned under the same clear, resonant messaging.
How Do You Use a Message Blueprint?
Message Blueprints are designed for internal use only—but they make external marketing so much easier.
They act as a compass when you’re creating everything from website copy, sales presentations, and ad campaigns to social media content, marketing emails, and PR materials. (In press releases, for example, we let our key messages guide the content for executive quotes.)
No more guesswork. No more off-brand copy. Just consistent messaging that hits home with your audience every time.
